Buganda Kingdom Prepares for Kabaka Mutebi’s 70th Birthday Celebration

Buganda’s Prime Minister, Charles Peter Mayiga, has emphasized the importance of Kabaka Ronald Mutebi’s 70th birthday, highlighting its role in preserving the Kingdom’s heritage and traditions. The event, scheduled for April 13, 2025, will celebrate Buganda’s cultural legacy and the Kabaka’s leadership.

Kabaka Mutebi’s Life and the Significance of the Celebration

While launching preparations, Mayiga reflected on Kabaka Mutebi’s life journey, recalling the challenges he has faced. He noted that at age 11, the Kabaka went into exile following the forced removal of his father, Sir Edward Muteesa II. Despite these hardships, he has remained a symbol of unity and strength for Buganda.

Mayiga stressed that Kabaka Mutebi’s birthday ranks among Buganda’s most significant royal events, alongside Enkuuka Y’omwaka and the Coronation Anniversary. He emphasized that the annual celebration reinforces the Kingdom’s cultural values and history.

“This tradition has been upheld by past Kabakas, ensuring that Buganda’s heritage remains strong,” Mayiga stated.

Organizing Committee and Public Participation

A special committee has been formed to oversee the event’s preparations. Second Deputy Katikkiro and Minister of Finance, Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, will lead the team, assisted by Minister of Education and Social Services, Cotlda Nakate Kikomeko.

Nsibirwa assured the public that all arrangements will align with Buganda’s cultural mission. He encouraged all Baganda to participate, emphasizing that the event belongs to the people.

“This celebration requires collective effort. Everyone has a role in making it successful,” Nsibirwa stated.

Returning to Physical Celebrations

Traditionally, Kabaka Mutebi’s birthday was celebrated across various counties. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, past celebrations were held virtually at Lubiri Palace. With the return of physical gatherings, Kingdom leaders aim to organize a grand event.

Although the official venue remains unconfirmed, Buganda’s leadership will soon announce the details. As preparations progress, the Kingdom looks forward to an honorable and culturally enriching celebration, paying tribute to Kabaka Mutebi’s leadership and legacy.
