dfcu Bank Launches dfcu Foundation to Deepen Support for Farmers and Small Businesses in Uganda

dfcu Bank has officially launched the dfcu Foundation, marking the rebranding of its Agribusiness Development Centre (ADC) during a high-profile event in Mbarara District. Operating under the theme “A New Name, A Renewed Commitment,” the transition reflects a broadened mission to support farmers, youth, and small businesses nationwide.

From ADC to dfcu Foundation: A Broader Mandate

The ADC, previously focused solely on agribusiness value chains, has now evolved into the dfcu Foundation, expanding its scope to include:

  • Financial literacy
  • Business mentorship
  • Access to credit
  • Market linkage programs
  • Youth and women empowerment initiatives

Speaking at the launch, Kate Kiiza, dfcu Bank’s Executive Director, said,

“This marks a new era of empowerment for Ugandan farmers and entrepreneurs. Our goal is to equip them with the resources and skills needed to thrive and transform Uganda’s economy.”

Inclusive Empowerment for Uganda’s Youth and Women

According to Mabel Ndawula, Executive Director of the dfcu Foundation, the revamped entity is targeting 100,000 beneficiaries over the next five years, with 60% women and 40% youth. This approach addresses Uganda’s demographic reality, where over 75% of the population is under 30, many facing unemployment.

“We’re not departing from our agribusiness roots—we’re expanding our reach to amplify impact,” Ndawula said.

Why the Transition Matters

Agriculture employs over 70% of Ugandans and contributes 24% to GDP. Yet, challenges like limited credit access, market instability, and lack of business training hinder sector growth. The dfcu Foundation aims to address these gaps with:

  • Affordable credit
  • Capacity building programs
  • Technology-based solutions
  • Gender-sensitive enterprise support

Building on ADC’s Legacy

As of December 2024, the ADC had:

  • Reached 59,000 beneficiaries
  • Supported 1,281 agribusiness enterprises
  • Delivered $22 million in business linkages
  • Connected 5,000+ enterprises to financial services
  • Achieved 52% female participation in programs since 2018

What’s Next for dfcu Foundation?

The Foundation will launch community engagement campaigns and partnerships with:

  • Farmer cooperatives
  • Government agencies
  • Development organizations
