Five Arrested Over Luuka Post-Election Violence

The Luuka post-election violence led to the arrest of five people after tensions flared in Buwologoma village, Bukanga sub-county. The clashes broke out on the evening of July 25 following disputes over the NRM LC5 flag bearer election.

Police said supporters of Peter Kafuko Mulyandawo, a former aspirant, allegedly attacked the backers of the declared winner. During the incident, a butchery caught fire and a nearby house sustained serious damage. Officers responded quickly and detained five individuals for questioning.

“We recorded a case of arson involving the butchery and another of property damage at a residence,” said ASP Michael Kasadha, spokesperson for Busoga North Police. Investigators are now gathering evidence and looking for additional suspects involved in the violence.

Kasadha urged residents to remain calm. He advised political candidates to follow legal procedures if they have election-related grievances. “Anyone who is unhappy with the results should seek justice through proper channels,” he added.

The Luuka post-election violence reflects a wider pattern seen across Uganda. In Kamuli District, one person lost their life in similar unrest. In Nakaseke, angry supporters injured several people and damaged property. Authorities detained more than 180 suspects during this wave of violence linked to the NRM primaries.

Security officials are now watching hotspots closely. They want to stop further unrest as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections. The Electoral Commission and party leaders have been asked to improve how they manage internal contests.

Ugandan police have promised firm action against anyone who incites or takes part in violence. They also called for political maturity and discipline among party supporters.

The recent Luuka post-election violence has raised serious questions about law enforcement, public order, and the conduct of internal party elections. As the investigation continues, communities hope for lasting peace and stronger systems that ensure fair and safe political processes.
