Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo Gets CAF Nod to Host Elite African Football Tournaments

Uganda’s Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo has reached a new milestone after securing official approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host elite continental football competitions. The announcement solidifies the stadium’s status as a premier sporting hub in Africa, just months after its grand reopening.

CAF Approval: A Game-Changer for Uganda

Following rigorous inspections, CAF has certified Hamz Stadium to stage high-profile tournaments, including:

  • Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON)
  • Men’s U17, U20, and U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers
  • Preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup

The approval marks a significant boost for Uganda’s football scene, opening doors for international tournaments and increasing global exposure for local talent.

World-Class Standards Recognized

CAF praised the stadium’s top-tier infrastructure and its contribution to raising football standards across the continent. This latest achievement adds to a growing list of accolades for the venue.

In October 2024, FIFA certified its playing surface, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino personally presenting the endorsement. The stadium was also nominated for a prestigious global sports award, further cementing its international reputation.

Leadership and Vision Behind the Success

The recognition is the result of relentless efforts by Uganda’s leadership and sports authorities. Rogers Mulindwa, Chairman of the Hamz Stadium Management Committee, credited the success to:

  • President Yoweri Museveni
  • Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni
  • State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang
  • FUFA President, Moses Magogo

“This achievement is a testament to Uganda’s dedication to excellence in sports,” Mulindwa remarked. “We remain committed to upholding world-class standards and showcasing Uganda’s rich football culture on a global stage.”

A Boost for Ugandan Football and Sports Tourism

CAF’s approval is expected to drive international football traffic to Uganda, fostering talent development and boosting sports tourism. The stadium’s cutting-edge amenities make it an attractive venue for future international competitions, potentially drawing more fans and investments into the country.

Hamz Stadium: The Crown Jewel of Ugandan Football

Originally known as Nakivubo War Memorial Grounds, the stadium underwent a massive transformation spearheaded by businessman Haji Dr. Hamis Kiggundu, in partnership with the Ugandan government.

Since its reopening, the stadium has hosted major football events, including:

  • CAF U17 and CHAN 2024 qualifiers in December 2024
  • Uganda Premier League matches for URA FC and Express FC
  • Confirmed as one of the venues for AFCON 2027

With state-of-the-art facilities and increasing global recognition, Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo is on course to become one of Africa’s most iconic football arenas, symbolizing Uganda’s growing influence in the sport.
