Isaiah Katumwa 30 Years of Jazz will take center stage on July 20 at the Kampala Serena Hotel. This grand concert honors Katumwa’s three-decade journey as Uganda’s leading jazz saxophonist and celebrates the evolution of the country’s jazz scene.
Tusker Malt, a premium beer brand by Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), will sponsor the concert. The partnership highlights a shared commitment to artistry, quality, and legacy. Tusker Malt has long supported Uganda’s music industry and sees Katumwa’s legacy as perfectly aligned with its values.
Denise P. Nazzinda, Premium Beers Manager at UBL, praised Katumwa’s consistency and craft. She noted that the saxophonist’s story resonates deeply with Tusker Malt’s philosophy. “Thirty years of jazz represents decades of musical excellence. We’re proud to support such a timeless journey,” she said.
Nazzinda also hinted at featuring Katumwa on Tusker Malt Conversessions, a platform that showcases authentic African musical talent. She emphasized that his style and values make him an ideal fit.
At the press launch, Katumwa spoke passionately about his journey. He recalled starting out with a broken saxophone and no mentor. Despite these obstacles, he taught himself to play and later performed with global legends like Manu Dibango and Hugh Masekela.
“This started as a dream. I just wanted to create something exceptional,” he said. “But this journey has never been just about me. It’s about lifting others as I rise. That’s the true meaning of legacy.”
Katumwa, holding back tears, thanked the sponsors and partners who supported him over the years. He also acknowledged the young jazz musicians he mentors and urged them to keep pushing the boundaries of the genre.
The concert will showcase some of Uganda’s finest jazz artists. Michael Kitanda, Joseph Sax, Myko Ouma, Shaka Mayanja, and others will perform alongside Katumwa. The lineup promises a night of vibrant and authentic Ugandan jazz.
Isaiah Katumwa 30 Years of Jazz goes beyond entertainment. It reflects a legacy of dedication, resilience, and mentorship. For jazz fans and music lovers, the event offers a rare opportunity to witness Uganda’s jazz icons perform on one stage.
