Kagame Calls for Ceasefire as M23 Rebels Seize Goma, Escalating DRC Crisis

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has called for an immediate ceasefire in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and urged a long-term resolution to the root causes of the conflict.

“Had a productive conversation with Secretary Rubio @SecRubio on the need to ensure a ceasefire in Eastern DRC and address the root causes of the conflict once and for all,” Kagame stated.

His appeal comes as M23 rebels continue their offensive against the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC), escalating a conflict that has already displaced thousands and heightened regional tensions.

Rwanda Responds to Missile Attacks

Tensions between Rwanda and the DRC have intensified after reports surfaced that the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) deployed air defense systems to counter missile attacks originating from Congolese territory.

According to The New Times, at least two bombs struck Mbugangari, Rubavu District, injuring about 15 civilians.

RDF spokesperson Brigadier-General Ronald Rwivanga accused FARDC and the UN-sanctioned FDLR militia of launching the attacks from Goma.

Meanwhile, border crossings at Petite Barrière and Grande Barrière have slowed dramatically as Rwanda temporarily closed schools and businesses in Rubavu to safeguard civilians.

M23 Rebels Capture Goma

In a dramatic turn of events, M23 rebels have seized Goma, the capital of North Kivu, marking a significant escalation of the conflict.

The group has demanded that FARDC soldiers surrender, warning of severe consequences for non-compliance.

The situation has forced thousands of Congolese civilians into refugee camps, with aid organizations struggling to provide food, water, and medical care.

Reports suggest that UN personnel have fled into Rwanda, while evacuation routes—including lake passages—have been completely cut off.

Regional and Global Response

With the crisis escalating, Kagame reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to regional stability.

“I look forward to working with the Trump Administration to create the prosperity and security that the people of our region deserve,” Kagame emphasized.

His comments follow an urgent regional summit proposal by Kenyan President William Ruto, who engaged in discussions with Kagame and DRC President Felix Tshisekedi.

Despite diplomatic efforts, Kagame warned that continued military aggression by FARDC and its allies would only worsen the crisis, urging renewed participation in the Luanda and Nairobi peace processes.
