Downing Street has confirmed that US Vice President Kamala Harris is unlikely to meet with UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer before the upcoming US election. As election day approaches on November 5, the potential meeting between Harris and Starmer is looking increasingly unlikely, with time running short.
Starmer, currently attending a Commonwealth summit in Samoa, had previously expressed interest in meeting both presidential candidates ahead of the US polls. During his visit to New York in September, Starmer met with former President Donald Trump while UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was in the country for the UN General Assembly. At that time, Starmer stated it would be “very good” to meet both candidates ahead of the election.
However, with just 12 days left until the election, logistical challenges seem to have diminished the possibility of a face-to-face meeting between Harris and Starmer. Downing Street has acknowledged that the window of opportunity for such a meeting is closing fast.
Starmer’s engagement with global leaders, including Trump, reflects his ongoing efforts to strengthen international relationships ahead of the next UK general election. Despite the missed opportunity to meet with Harris, Starmer continues to position himself as a significant figure on the global stage.
As the US election draws near, the focus remains on the intense competition between candidates, with the outcome expected to have far-reaching implications for international relations, including those with the UK.
