Trump and Meloni trade talks took center stage during Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit to Washington. Her trip, described as a “commercial peace mission,” aimed to ease tensions after Trump imposed a 10% tariff on nearly all foreign imports and paused a 20% tariff on the EU.
Although they didn’t announce any tariff breakthrough, both leaders projected unity. Trump said, “There will be a trade deal, 100%, but it will be a fair deal.” Meloni agreed, adding, “I’m sure we can make the West great again.”
The Oval Office meeting reflected strong personal chemistry. Trump praised Meloni’s leadership and tough stance on immigration. He added that more leaders should follow her example.
Meloni returned the praise. She criticized “woke ideology,” called for stricter border policies, and declared, “The goal for me is to make the West great again.” Her alignment with Trump strengthened her conservative appeal on both sides of the Atlantic.
Trump, confident about trade outcomes, said, “I’m in no rush.” He promised to finalize deals with “every country over the next three to four weeks.” He also showed caution on China’s 145% tariffs, suggesting he might reduce them to avoid hurting consumers.
Meloni’s aides view the visit as a success. Trump accepted her invitation to Rome and may meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This diplomatic gesture helps Meloni position herself as a link between Trump and the EU.
During the joint press conference, Meloni highlighted her government’s progress. “Italy today is stable and reliable,” she said. She pointed to lower inflation and improved jobs, then smiled at Trump and added, “You’re a businessman. You understand me.”
Their talks also covered defense spending. Trump repeated his demand that NATO members meet the 2% GDP benchmark. Italy currently spends 1.49%, but Meloni promised a boost at the June summit.
Meloni’s opposition at home had mixed reactions. Carlo Calenda praised her success in keeping a firm stance on Ukraine and opening a line between Trump and EU leaders. However, he criticized her praise of Trump’s culture-war rhetoric.
Meloni will meet US Vice President JD Vance in Rome tomorrow. Her growing influence with Trump earns her the title of “Trump whisperer.” Whether this brings real policy wins or just warm words remains to be seen. But Meloni now returns to Europe with renewed political weight.
