President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni urges UPDF officers to reject corruption. He warned that it damages the army’s integrity and puts lives at risk during battle. Speaking at the graduation of 413 officers at Uganda Military Academy in Kabamba, he emphasized the value of discipline, personal health, and equipment care.
He advised the officers to avoid drugs, alcohol, and risky behavior. “Love yourself so that you don’t die of diseases, alcohol or drugs,” he said. “You must also love your equipment. If you don’t care for it and you’re corrupt, war will claim your life,” Museveni added. He declared that a corrupt soldier is an enemy of both the army and the nation.
The graduates included 74 armour platoon commanders, 122 armour technicians, and 217 armour crews. Museveni congratulated them for mastering complex tank operations and tactical maneuvers in just six months. “You have learned quickly,” he said. “I pass you out today for successfully completing these specialized courses.”
He also reminded the officers that warfare relies on both old principles and modern advancements. “War is both a science and an art,” he said. “Science is about equipment. Art is how you organize and use it.” He warned that tanks are now vulnerable to drones and airstrikes. Officers must adapt quickly to such new realities.
During the event, Museveni observed a live tank demonstration. He said tanks are no longer inherently safe. Drones and aerial strikes pose serious risks. He reaffirmed his support for modernizing the UPDF and praised the army’s current leadership.
Museveni said he was glad that the Chief of Defence Forces is improving soldier welfare. He mentioned ongoing upgrades in training, barracks, and other military infrastructure.
Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, said the UPDF is turning all training centers into centers of excellence. Fourteen facilities, including Kabamba, have already achieved this status. He also warned graduates against becoming complacent or indisciplined.
Brig Gen Peter Chandia, commandant of the Armoured Warfare Training School, confirmed the graduates had gained key combat skills. He said they can now deploy advanced mobility and firepower tactics in real battle scenarios.
