President Yoweri Museveni has officially joined Instagram, a Facebook owned photo and video sharing social networking service.
Museveni who has publicly confessed to be an active user of social media was only on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, but had never considered joining Instagram on Thursday, he announced to have officially joined the social media platform.
“Bazukulu, I am now on Instagram,” Museveni tweeted in excitement on joining the platform where he has 6, 535 followers.
The president recently said his love for social media has seen him win over many supporters who were initially against him.
“I am engaging with young people on social media and some of them abuse me that I am very stupid but I answer them back. I tell them I may be stupid but I am able to walk on my two feet. I don’t have to abuse them,” Museveni said recently while at the NRM headquarters.
According to Museveni, the engagements have been fruitful after helping him convert some of the social media commentators who have in the past been abusing him.
“I don’t have to fight with these young people to win them over. When I send them messages to answer them, if they are 10(at the beginning) who were attacking me, you find only six remaining. The other four say the old man has made a good point.”
“Then I remain six who ask when I am going home and I tell them going home is not a big problem but first solve problems of Uganda including tribalism, work for East African federalism because you need it for your coffee, sugar and milk.”
He says that when he continues to answer back, many of commentators who were initially abusing him eventually turn to agree with his points.
“You don’t have to be violent with these people. Use your tongue (to convince them),” Museveni says.
Museveni has in the past two to three years used mostly social media to communicate his message that he releases through missives on various topical issues.
However, many have questioned Museveni’s new love for social media whereas others have jokingly christened him as a blogger due to his numerous posts of late but he insists, he is able to reach out to many people through his social media posts.
Museveni’s love for social media has gone up especially towards the forthcoming general election that the Electoral Commission recently said will see campaigns carried out on social media and other various media platforms as opposed to the traditional mass rallies.
The President’s new love for social media has also been described by many, especially analysts as one meant to counter Kyadondo East MP and presidential aspirant, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine who equally has a large following on social med
