Speaker Urges Government to Deploy Intern Doctors to Address Healthcare Worker Shortage

Anita Among, a speaker, has called on the government to address the shortage of health workers at health facilities in the country by deploying intern doctors.

She expressed her concern over the lack of motivation among health workers caused by inadequate funding for the health sector. Among referred to the recent #HealthSectorExhibition campaign on social media and urged the government to provide adequate funding for the health sector.

She emphasized that failure to deploy intern doctors not only leads to a shortage of qualified medical personnel but also means that the interns cannot practice as doctors.

Among cited a report from her district Bukedea, which indicated that health workers were not present in health facilities. In response, Hon. Michael Bukenya stated that there are over 2000 interns transitioning to become doctors who are currently stranded with pay and deployment.

He urged the Ministry of Finance to release funds for the interns so that they can start working. Among also emphasized the need to encourage health workers to always be available for the people and assured that Parliament will strive to ensure adequate funding for health workers, hospitals, and medicines.
