On June 1, 2024, Kampala witnessed the grand opening of Hamz Stadium, formerly Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, a landmark event signaling a new era for Ugandan sports and entertainment. This grand vision, realized by young mogul Hamis Kiggundu through Ham Enterprises (U) Ltd, was a testament to his dedication and partnership with the Ugandan Government.
From Vision to Reality
In 2017, Hamis Kiggundu embarked on an ambitious journey to transform Nakivubo Stadium into a modern sports hub. This public-private partnership reached its pinnacle on April 25, 2024, when President Museveni commended Kiggundu’s efforts and announced a 49-year lease to manage and recoup his investment.
A Spectacular Opening Night
The grand opening event on June 1, 2024, was an unforgettable night. The festivities began with a stunning 10-minute fireworks display, followed by a night filled with sports and entertainment. The stadium, nearly filled to its 35,000 capacity, saw all 40 executive boxes sold out, reflecting the public’s excitement and support.
A Night of Sports and Entertainment
The evening featured a thrilling array of activities. URA FC’s 3-0 victory over Kitara FC kicked off the night, followed by another breathtaking fireworks display. Performances by Ugandan music stars like Rema, Eddy Kenzo, and Bebe Cool kept the energy high. SC Villa’s 1-0 win over Express FC and exciting boxing matches added to the event’s allure, culminating in a draw between Golola Moses and Umar Sematta.
A Gathering of VIPs
The grand opening attracted numerous VVIPs and celebrities, including former Vice Presidents Gilbert Bukenya and Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, FUFA President Moses Magogo, and tycoon Ahmed Omar Mandela.
