Two Men Wounded in Trump Rally Shooting Speak Out: “Secret Service Failed Us”

In an exclusive interview with Kampala Express News, Jim Copenhaver, 74, and David Dutch, 57, publicly shared their harrowing experience of being shot during the July 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally. The two men, who were seated in the bleachers behind Trump when gunfire erupted, criticized the U.S. Secret Service and law enforcement for what they described as a negligent security response.

Both Copenhaver and Dutch expressed their disappointment in the handling of security at the event, which they believe failed to protect not only Trump but also the innocent civilians in attendance. “The negligence was vast. It was terrible,” said Dutch, emphasizing his belief that poor communication and lack of proper coordination led to the tragic outcome.

Copenhaver echoed these sentiments, asserting, “I’m sure there was negligence. It wouldn’t have happened, had it been secure.”

The two men were critically injured in the attack. Copenhaver was struck in the triceps and abdomen, while Dutch suffered a liver wound. Both have faced ongoing health challenges as a result of their injuries. Dutch described the experience as being “hit with a sledgehammer,” while Copenhaver recounted seeing his sleeve blown away before collapsing from the second shot.

Now, months after the attack, the physical and emotional toll continues to impact their lives. Copenhaver has lost 30 pounds, walks with a cane, and still experiences abdominal pain. Dutch, who lost 25 pounds, remains unable to drive or lift more than 10 pounds and struggles with daily activities.

Attorneys representing the men have stated they plan to sue and are currently investigating whom to hold accountable. As Dutch summarized, “The whole security setup was poor.” Both men, who were thrilled to attend the rally, now face the long-term consequences of the attack and are seeking justice for the security failures they believe allowed the tragedy to unfold.
