The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed another case of the mpox variant clade Ib in England, raising the total to eight cases since October 2023.
Officials identified the latest case in London, involving a patient who recently returned from Uganda, where the virus is spreading within communities. UKHSA clarified that this case has no connection to previous infections reported in England.
Despite the detection, health authorities reassured the public that the risk remains low. The clade Ib variant emerged as a global health concern after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a health emergency in August.
“In light of the ongoing outbreak in parts of Africa, occasional imported cases of clade Ib mpox in the UK are expected,” UKHSA stated.
