UPDF Soldier Killed, Six Injured in Military Convoy Accident

A UPDF soldier died on the spot, and six others sustained serious injuries when a military convoy carrying Major General Paul Muhanguzi, commander of the UPDF Second Infantry Division, was involved in a head-on collision along the Masaka-Kampala highway.

The accident occurred near Lukaya when the lead military vehicle, registration number D02DF 083, attempted to overtake other cars and crashed into an oncoming Toyota Harrier, registration number UBG 979J.

Eyewitnesses reported that the military convoy, traveling towards Kampala, made a risky overtaking maneuver near Bajja, resulting in the fatal collision.

Casualties and Injuries

The deceased soldier, a Lance Corporal, was in the lead vehicle at the time of the crash. Six other UPDF personnel suffered critical injuries and were rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

Fortunately, Major General Muhanguzi, who was in the convoy, escaped unhurt.

The UPDF has yet to release an official statement on the incident. However, Greater Masaka regional police spokesperson, Twaha Kasirye, confirmed the accident and the soldier’s death.

“Six others were taken to the hospital in critical condition after their vehicle overturned multiple times upon impact,” Kasirye stated.

He further acknowledged that the military driver was overtaking in a dangerous spot, leading to the tragic accident.

Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the crash to determine further details and reinforce road safety measures.
