One of the bodyguards of General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who also serves as the Special Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, is facing imminent arrest, charges, and potential prosecution for assaulting a pregnant woman. According to sources familiar with the matter, Captain Asasira Yona, attached to the Special Forces Command and part of the security detail guarding Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba (MK), is implicated in the incident.
Captain Asasira, a resident of Nyarubare Cell in Ntungamo Sub County, Ntungamo District, allegedly assaulted Mrs. Nayebare Mereth, who is six months pregnant and married to Tayebwa Francis from Kyangara Cell, Nyarubare Parish in Ntungamo Sub County.
According to reports from Kyangara, on the afternoon of May 21, Captain Asasira, accompanied by three SFC soldiers and over 30 other individuals, was involved in an illegal operation on the land. Mrs. Nayebare was documenting the trespassing activity when Captain Asasira approached her. He forcefully grabbed her by the neck, pushed her to the ground, confiscated her phone, deleted all the information, and damaged the screen. Witnesses reported hearing Captain Asasira threaten Mrs. Nayebare, saying, “You woman, I have been told that you are the wife of Afande Francis. If I see you taking any pictures from here again, I will shoot you.”
Shaken by the assault, Mrs. Nayebare locked herself inside her house, fearing for her life.
The genesis of the incident can be traced back to a long-standing land dispute between the family of the late Yorokamu Tumusiime from Kyangara, Nyarubare in Ntungamo District, and Ntungamo Sub County. The family claims that their late father purchased approximately 3.5 hectares of land from John Patrick Kabenje 50 years ago. They assert that they were born and raised on that land and even buried their father there in 1995. The family alleges that their attempts to obtain a land title for their property, initiated in 2012, were thwarted by political leaders with vested interests in their land.
The family members maintain that, despite facing hurdles, they proceeded with the process of acquiring a certificate of title for their land. The local land committee approved their application, which was then forwarded to the District Land Board. However, before the payments could be made, political leaders, including Mugabi Sam, the former LCV Councillor for Ntungamo Sub County, and Enos Matanure, the former LC 3 Chairperson, intervened, claiming that a portion of the land belonged to the government.
In the beginning of this year, the family learned that part of their land was to be leased to FUFU as a football playground. They promptly placed advertisements on Radio Ankole, asserting that the land in question was not government-owned but part of their family’s ancestral land. Subsequently, the RDC Ntungamo District, Mucunguzi Godfrey, summoned a meeting between the family and district members. However, the RDC arrived several hours late and made a ruling favoring the surrender of the land.
In May, after leveling the land with marram (a type of crushed stone), the family was taken to Ntungamo Police Station and provided statements affirming their ownership rights. The police instructed that no activities should take place on the land until a court ruling was issued.
To their shock, last Thursday, the family received information that Captain Yona Asasira, accompanied by a group of individuals, began removing the marram, which was considered evidence by the police. Captain Asasira claimed to be acting on orders from Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who purportedly decided to return the land to the public.
The assault on Mrs. Nayebare has raised serious concerns about the conduct and accountability of security personnel, particularly those assigned to protect high-ranking officials. Legal action is now imminent, with charges of criminal assault, threatening violence, and malicious damage being filed against Captain Asasira. The case has been registered under Reference Number SD 33/19/06/2023 at Central Police Station in Ntungamo. As the investigation progresses, the nation awaits a swift and fair resolution to this disturbing incident.
