Bulawayo, Zimbabwe – Three security guards in the suburb of Nguboyenja were arrested following allegations of assault, sexual assault, and robbery against a 23-year-old man suspected of theft. The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the abuse of power and human rights violations.
According to reports, the victim was accused of stealing a radio speaker from a storage facility at Davies Hall, where merchants store their products. Three security officers, identified as Philisani Khumalo, Shelton Luphahla, and an unnamed individual, intercepted the young man as he was leaving the premises. They demanded to search his belongings, which included a bucket containing various items.
Upon discovering the stolen radio speaker, the guards subjected the suspect to a violent physical assault. However, the situation escalated further when they allegedly coerced him into engaging in a humiliating act of masturbation while recording the incident. Disturbingly, the guards reportedly cheered and filmed the victim during this degrading act.
The victim’s ordeal did not end there. The security guards proceeded to tear his shirt and forced him to remove his trousers and boxer shorts. They then allegedly took turns sexually assaulting him in an act of retaliation. After the assault, the guards confined the victim inside a storeroom, where he remained until his release the following morning when his sister came looking for him.
The victim and his sister immediately reported the incident to the authorities at the Bulawayo Central Police Station. As a result of their report, the police launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of Philisani Khumalo and his accomplices. During the police response, a pair of black tennis shoes believed to belong to the victim was recovered at the scene.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident, expressing concern over the allegations of assault, sexual abuse, and robbery perpetrated by the security guards. He assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that such reprehensible acts are not tolerated.
The incident has ignited public outrage, with human rights organizations and concerned citizens calling for swift action and justice for the victim. Advocates are highlighting the need for stricter regulations and training to prevent abuse of power by security personnel and to protect the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their alleged offenses.
