Rajiv Ruparelia dies in car crash following a tragic accident at the Busabala Flyover in Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso District. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, May 3, 2025, and police confirmed the details shortly afterward.
Traffic Police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura explained that Rajiv was driving a Nissan GTR, registration number UAT 638L, when he hit temporary pavements at the flyover’s roundabout section. The impact made the car overturn and catch fire.
Rajiv had been driving from Kajjansi toward Munyonyo when the crash happened. “The vehicle overturned and caught fire, killing the driver instantly,” Kananura said. He added that investigators are already working to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Police officers and firefighters responded quickly and put out the flames at the scene. Despite their efforts, they could not save Rajiv, who had already succumbed to the fire.
Rajiv, 33, was the son of Ugandan business magnate Sudhir Ruparelia. He led the Ruparelia Group as managing director, overseeing its vast operations in banking, real estate, insurance, education, hospitality, floriculture, and media across East Africa.
Beyond business, Rajiv had built a reputation as a passionate rally driver. He actively participated in national and regional motorsport events and invested in efforts to grow Uganda’s racing industry.
News of his death spread quickly online. Business leaders, public officials, and motorsport enthusiasts shared heartfelt tributes. Many described him as a forward-thinking entrepreneur with a bold vision for Uganda’s future.
SP Kananura urged drivers to remain cautious, especially in areas with temporary road installations. He also assured the public that police would release more updates as the investigation continues.
Rajiv’s passing leaves a major void in both Uganda’s business and sporting communities. His leadership, energy, and ambition had already begun shaping the next chapter of the Ruparelia legacy.
