The Commercial Court has said it is still stuck with cases that are worth four trillion shillings.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday, Justice Henry Peter Adonyo, the head of the Commercial Division of the high Court said the total value of the pending cases by December,31, 2019 was shs4.1 trillion.
“The division receives funding from both government and the Justice, Law and Order Sector and these funds are applied towards cases management, welfare, maintenance and office supplies. The funding however is not synch with the needs of the division which are large given the high number of cases registered and need quick disposal,”Adonyo said.
He revealed that as of August,21, 2020, 5454 cases were pending and the number had increased from 4670 by December,31, 2019.
The judge said the little funds make it possible for the Commercial Division of the High Court to dispose of the cases.
Commenting about staffing at the court, Adonyo said some of the judges and staff have been transferred in and out of the division whereas others have retired from service since December 2019 and that this has affected the disposal of some cases
Covid-19 lockdown
Justice Adonyo explained that despite the onset of the Coronavirus lockdown, the Commercial Division of the High Court continued working and consequently, over 1100 cases have been disposed of during the period.
“The total value of cases that have been completed from January,01, 2020 to August ,21,2020 is shs2.7 trillion,” he said.
