Greater Masaka Zonal Commander Collapses and Dies on Duty

The Greater Masaka Zonal Commander, Commissioner of Police (CP) Godfrey Maate, died after collapsing while on duty in Sango Bay, Kyotera District. Police officers rushed him to a nearby clinic for treatment, but doctors pronounced him dead on Sunday night. His sudden death shocked colleagues across the Uganda Police Force.

CP Godfrey Maate’s Service and Leadership

The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, appointed CP Maate as Greater Masaka Zonal Commander in July 2025. He took charge of regional operations, focusing on securing the 2025/26 General Election. His appointment reflected confidence in his experience and discipline.

Maate joined the Uganda Police Force as a young constable and steadily rose through the ranks to commissioner. He dedicated his life to improving community security and supporting fellow officers through mentorship and teamwork. His colleagues describe him as humble, strategic, and loyal.

Early Career and Training

The late Greater Masaka Zonal Commander belonged to the first group of officers sent to Jinja Military School for training in 1998. He graduated alongside Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Assistant Inspector General of Police John Ndungutse. That shared experience built lifelong professional relationships that shaped Uganda’s policing culture.

During the 1990s, Maate served at Kampala Central Police Station in the operations department. Later, he worked as a commander in Kalangala, Kasese, and other districts. He built a reputation for quick decision-making and fairness while handling difficult security assignments.

Commitment and Professional Legacy

CP Maate often led security operations that safeguarded national school examinations. His leadership ensured smooth coordination between law enforcement and education officials. He emphasized honesty, precision, and community cooperation in every role.

Beyond his operational duties, Maate helped young officers understand discipline and integrity. His approach inspired a generation of police leaders across Uganda. Many officers credit him for building strong regional command structures that improved response times and public confidence.

Remembering a Dedicated Officer

Colleagues across the Uganda Police Force mourn the death of the Greater Masaka Zonal Commander. Officers describe him as a committed patriot who preferred action to words. He served quietly but effectively, often staying in the field to supervise missions personally.

His death comes as Uganda’s security agencies intensify election-related preparations. The police leadership will announce funeral arrangements and appoint his replacement soon. Despite the loss, Maate’s impact on Uganda’s policing remains clear.
