In a bold move to clear the air and protect her integrity, Irene Khalayi recently invited several media houses to her residence in Bunekesa, Manafwa District, to address rumors about her being invited to join the National Resistance Movement (NRM). During the press conference, Khalayi shared a detailed account of the unsettling events and reiterated her commitment to serving her community through the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Irene Khalayi began by narrating a peculiar phone call she received from an unknown person. The caller did not disclose their identity but informed her that guests would be arriving at her house later that evening. True to the caller’s words, around 9 PM, a black Toyota Highlander pulled up to her residence. A woman who identified herself as Ruth stepped out and handed Khalayi a letter, claiming it was from the district leadership of the NRM.
The letter, according to Khalayi, was filled with promises. The NRM acknowledged her significant impact on the community and expressed a desire for her to join their party. They offered her a high-ranking position within the NRM, substantial financial compensation, a new vehicle, and support for all her community initiatives, should she choose to leave the NUP.
Irene Khalayi’s response was firm and unequivocal. She tore the letter into pieces in front of Ruth, declaring that her commitment was to the change needed in her community, not to personal gain. Khalayi stated, “It’s not about me, but about the change we need. Offering me incentives to switch sides is nothing but a bribe.”
Ruth, visibly taken aback, left with a parting remark: “You have time to consider the offer.” However, the ordeal did not end there. In the days following the encounter, Khalayi began receiving anonymous threats, causing her great concern for her safety.
“I felt it was crucial to inform the public about these threats,” Khalayi told the assembled media. “My life is in danger, but I want everyone to know that I will not betray my people. I remain dedicated to serving my community and fighting for the positive change we all believe in.”
Irene Khalayi’s public address not only shed light on the pressures and threats she faces but also reinforced her steadfast commitment to her community and the principles of the NUP. Her bravery in confronting these challenges head-on has only strengthened her resolve to continue her work.
As the situation develops, Khalayi has vowed to keep the public informed and remain transparent about any further threats or attempts to undermine her work. Her determination to stand firm in the face of adversity serves as an inspiring example of leadership and dedication to the cause of genuine community development and change.
