Nakaseke Farm Arson Attack Destroys Property Worth Shs3 Billion

Authorities in Nakaseke District are investigating a suspected arson attack that destroyed farm property worth billions of shillings in Kito Sub-county on Sunday. The incident, believed to stem from an unresolved land dispute, caused extensive damage and left several workers injured.

Property Destroyed

The fire destroyed valuable equipment, including a tractor, bulldozer, wheel loader, and a truck. According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twineamazima, detectives have already inspected the site, documented statements, and initiated an investigation.

“Attackers burned down four structures, a wheel loader, a tractor, a bulldozer, and a Pajero car. They also stole engine fuel and other valuables,” Twineamazima said.

The farm, located in Butibulongo Village, belongs to commercial farmer Arnold Mayinja. Police have since deployed officers to secure the area and assist with the investigation.

Workers Injured During the Attack

Farm workers reported that the attackers, masked and armed with machetes and clubs, invaded the property early Sunday morning under the cover of darkness.

“The attackers ordered us to leave and burned down over five makeshift structures containing our property,” one injured worker said.

Several workers sustained injuries during the attack and are currently receiving medical attention.

Possible Link to Land Dispute

Kito Parish residents suspect the attack is tied to a long-standing land ownership conflict. The farm sits on land once part of a six-square-mile property involved in unresolved legal battles over ownership.

“This land has been at the center of an ongoing dispute. We know that Mayinja and other parties have fought for its control, with the matter still in court,” explained Samuel Kironde, Kito Village’s local defense secretary.

Farmer’s Reaction

Farm owner Arnold Mayinja believes the attack was deliberate. “The attack was planned, no doubt,” he stated. Despite his concerns, Mayinja said he is allowing the police to conduct their investigations. He also vowed to hold the attackers accountable.

Ongoing Investigations

Police are working to identify the attackers and uncover the motive behind the incident. Investigators suspect the unresolved land conflict may have triggered the attack. Authorities continue to gather evidence from the scene and witness testimonies to advance the case.

This attack highlights the growing tensions over land disputes in Uganda, which often escalate into violence. Residents and stakeholders urge swift action to address these conflicts and prevent similar incidents in the future.
