Jinja City has seen a breakthrough in its fight against crime as police apprehended 30 individuals believed to be members of a notorious criminal gang that has been causing havoc among residents in the area.
The group was arrested while en route to Bugweri District to attend the burial of one of their colleagues who had been lynched by a mob after being caught in the act of theft. According to authorities, this gang has a history of ambushing unsuspecting victims and robbing them of their belongings along the Jinja-Kamuli and Jinja-Iganga highways, as well as within city centers.
Mr. James Mubi, the Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson, stated that these arrests mark a significant achievement in the pursuit of justice. The police had been actively seeking to apprehend the individuals involved in various crimes, and the information regarding their planned journey to attend the burial proved crucial in their capture.
Among the 30 suspects, one individual is believed to be involved in the murder of Prosy Nyanga, a weight lifter who was brutally killed in Bugembe in September 2022. Mr. Mubi highlighted that the gang typically carries weapons such as machetes and operates on motorcycles, with a following vehicle to secure their loot.
“They frequently change vehicles, including a Subaru, although we are still working to identify the license plate number,” Mr. Mubi revealed.
In a further effort to combat criminal activities, the police spokesperson announced that the authorities would soon initiate the arrest of landlords who rent out single rooms to more than three individuals. This measure aims to discourage overcrowding and potential criminal activities associated with such accommodations.
The apprehension of these suspected gang members is a significant step towards enhancing the safety and security of Jinja City residents.
