3 arrested over fake police Twitter, Facebook accounts

KAMPALA – The Uganda Police has arrested three people in connection with operating fake police Twitter and Facebook accounts that they have been using to post disparaging content.

The three suspects whose identity police preferred not to reveal are currently being interrogated at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters.

CID Spokesperson Charles Twine confirmed the arrests noting, “Our indomitable Electronic team has arrested three punks who have been operating fake police Twitter and Facebook accounts, posting all sorts of nonsense to ridicule our heard-earned image,” Twine said.

He noted that the three were found in possession of the very gadgets they were using to operate these fake accounts.

He noted that CID had built a formidable electronic countermeasure and anti-cyber-crimes team whose output will inevitably make the perpetrators endangered species.

Besides operating fake police account, the suspects also opened up accounts for senior police officers including police spokesperson Fred Enanga and Deputy Police Spokesperson Polly Namaye.

It also remains unclear whether the same group was the one behind creating pseudo accounts of senior Government officials and Government agencies.
