Algeria has taken the decision to ban the movie “Barbie,” citing concerns that the film promotes homosexuality and other Western behaviors that do not align with the country’s religious and cultural values, according to reports from Reuters.
While the movie had been screening in some Algerian cinemas for several weeks, the culture ministry has now issued an order to cease its display.
Controversy has surrounded the film in various countries. Lebanon and Kuwait have also banned it, with Lebanon claiming it promotes homosexuality and sexual transformation, while Kuwait argued that it introduces ideas and beliefs foreign to its society and public order. Additionally, Vietnam banned the film due to a scene involving a map displaying disputed Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea.
Given Algeria’s predominantly Muslim population, homosexuality is considered illegal within the country.
“Barbie,” released in 2023, features Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the roles of Barbie and Ken. Since its debut on July 21, the film has exceeded $1 billion in global box office ticket sales.
The film delves into themes such as feminism, body positivity, the significance of ambitious aspirations, the strength of friendships, and the importance of authenticity. It challenges conventional gender stereotypes, depicting Barbie as a strong and self-reliant individual unafraid to challenge societal norms.
