Police have arrested the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) coordinator for Bunyoro region for allegedly interfering with the ongoing ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party elections for mayor and LCV aspirants.
Mr Ismail Kasule was arrested by heavily armed police officers in Kyesiiga suburb of Hoima town at the venue where NRM was electing its flag bearer for the Hoima city Mayorship.
The incumbent, Ms Mary Grace Mugasa ois tussling out with Prince Brian Kaboyo and the Kahoora division chairman, Mr Fredrick Alibankooha.
The Albertine regional police spokesperson, Mr Julius Hakiza, said Kasule was arrested alongside two other people as they allegedly interfered with the NRM primaries.
“He was found bribing voters who had lined up to participate in the NRM primaries,” Mr Hakiza said.
He claimed that police recovered some exhibits from Mr Kasule but about five other suspects managed to flee from the venue before they were apprehended. Advertisement
However, Kasule denied the charges and said he is being framed by police and some NRM leaders who are scared of his candidature.
“These are tramped up charges aimed at intimidating me but I can’t be intimidated. I will keep fighting for the rights of my people,” said Mr Kasule who is vying for the Hoima city West parliamentary seat on the ticket of ANT.
On Saturday, police dispersed a rally which Kasule had organized at the Hoima FDC offices to launch his campaign manifesto.
Heavily armed police stormed the venue and fired tear gas which dispersed his supporters.
