Rukutana still in detention, transferred to Mbarara – Police

The Police have dismissed as careless propaganda reports that labour state minister Mwesigwa Rukutana who was arrested in relation to a shooting incident had regained his freedom.

The deputy spokesperson of Police, Polly Namaye that the Rushenyi MP had been transferred to Mbarara.

He is being held at Rwizi regional headquarters in Mbarara, according to Namaye.

“Investigations started yesterday,” Namaye added.

Late Saturday, sections of online media indicated that the legislator was at his home enjoying a local dish.

But Namaye dismissed this as ” their own propaganda”.

Namaye issued a statement on Saturday that Rukutana had been detained with his three escorts following a shooting incident in Ruhama, Ntungamo district.

Police said, one person was seriously injured and a motor vehicle damaged.

A video clip in which Rukutana is seen seizing a gun to shoot at some people has been circulating on social media since morning.

Several pictures have also been circulating on various forums, showing Rukutana wielding a gun.  There are also pictures of the victims who were injured on the head.

Rukutana was by Friday night losing the vote count tally for Rushenyi constituency for which he is the incumbent MP, against challenger Naome Kabasharira.

But Rukutana has since denied the charges brought against him of inciting violence, attempted murder by shooting, and malicious damage of property.

Rukutana is a former Deputy Attorney General.
