Tanzania Plans to Construct First Bridge in Africa Connecting Mainland to Zanzibar Islands

The government of Tanzania has announced plans to build a 50km bridge connecting the mainland to the Zanzibar Islands, which would be the first bridge of its kind in Africa.

The country’s deputy minister of Works and Transport, Godfrey Kasekenya, revealed that talks about the construction have been ongoing since March 11, 2023, and are in advanced stages.

The construction of the bridge will involve a partnership with the private sector, and M/S China Overseas Engineering Group Company (COVEC) has expressed interest in building the bridge.

The idea of the bridge was first proposed in 2020 and has since sparked debates among Tanzanians, but science and technology have shown that the project is possible with adequate funding.
