The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and paramilitary group has prompted Kenya and Uganda to evacuate their nationals from the area.
Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Alfred Mutua, has announced that the government plans to evacuate up to 400 Kenyan citizens from Sudan, with the help of at least four countries, including Ethiopia.
Uganda has already evacuated over 200 nationals, including diplomats, businesspeople, students, and Hajj pilgrims who were on their way to Saudi Arabia.
Both countries have been coordinating with their respective air forces to conduct the evacuation programmes. The majority of the stranded Kenyans are students in Khartoum, reflecting Sudan’s recent popularity as a higher learning destination for many East African nations.
The evacuation programmes involve a combination of road and air transport, with most Kenyan citizens being transported through Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Port Sudan.
