Amuriat names Biriggwa to lead his campaign team

The Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential flag bearer Patrick Amuriat yesterday appointed Wasswa Biriggwa, the party national chairperson, to head his campaign team for 2021 General Election.
Mr Biriggwa contested with Mr Amuriat for the party’s flag but stepped down for Mr Amuriat on the polling day last week.

The FDC electoral commission announced Mr Amuriat as the party flag bearer for 2021 presidential elections.
Addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Kampala, yesterday, Mr Amuriat said Mr Biriggwa would be the director general of his campaigns.
He also named Mr Roland Kaginda Mugume, the FDC Rukungiri Municipality MP, as the national field coordinator, and Mr Albert Okello Oduman as the executive director of the campaign bureau.

“I have assembled a formidable campaign team following various  consultations with the FDC leadership. They are eminent and tested leaders, therefore  I do not have any doubt that they will do a robust job. The above leaders are expected to set up a campaign bureau and structure,” he said.

Mr Amuriat also said the full campaign team will be unveiled on Monday next week after the party’s  approval.
He said his campaigns will be characterised by messages for Ugandans to rise up against oppression, adding that they will be guided by the party and their former presidential candidate, Dr Kizza Besigye.

“People feel the oppression where the majority are poor and only a few have the resources. We have been moving across the country during our internal campaigns and the poverty levels have shot [through the roof]. We are going to count on the awareness among Ugandans  to deliver our campaigns,” Mr Amuriat said.

At the same function, Mr Amuriat said the party has started collecting signatures required for a presidential candidate to be nominated. Advertisement

The national Electoral Commission (EC), requires all aspiring candidates to collect 100 signatures from two-thirds of the total number of districts in the country as a precondition for their nomination. The nomination for presidential candidates is scheduled for October 16.
EC has given all the presidential aspirants up to the end of this week to present signatures ahead of their nominations slated for next month.

Mr Amuriat also revealed that he would start a nationwide mobilisation campaign, where he will meet a number of people including the religious and cultural leaders, civil society organisations and opinion leaders to build a good relationship between them and the party.

“I will commence a countrywide campaign on October 17. During this exercise, I will interact with FDC leaders, supporters and nominated candidates. This exercise will be concluded with a grand homecoming in Soroti, where I was born,” Mr Amuriat said.

The EC in its recent roadmap banned public rallies due to Covid-19 and asked various political parties to utilise the media to conduct campaigns.
But Mr Amuriat said he would defy and go ahead with public rallies because the EC let the National Resistance Movement to conduct public rallies during their primaries.
