Questions surround the whereabouts of a Wakiso resident and an unidentified male companion following an alleged violent confrontation in Kyankima village.
WAKISO, UGANDA — An alleged same-sex relationship reportedly sparked a frightening confrontation in Kyankima, Gayaza, on December 15, 2021, after a group of angry residents descended on the home of Joseph Nyanzi, threatening to attack him and an unidentified man believed to have been visiting the residence.
What reportedly began as accusations about the men’s relationship quickly escalated into threats of violence, forcing the two to flee before the crowd could confront them.
Nyanzi, a Ugandan national who had been working in the United Arab Emirates, was reportedly visiting his home in Gayaza when the incident occurred.
According to an account of the confrontation, the crowd gathered outside the property and demanded that the occupants come out. Fearing for their safety, the two men reportedly escaped by climbing over the perimeter wall.
The account further alleges that members of the crowd subsequently forced their way into the residence and damaged property.

Alleged Attack Raises Questions About Community Safety
The reported confrontation highlights the dangers associated with accusations of homosexuality in communities where same-sex relationships face strong social opposition.
Nyanzi was reportedly known to residents as the occupant of the house, while the identity of the second man who escaped alongside him remained unknown.
The nature of their alleged relationship has not been independently established, and no evidence has emerged confirming that either man committed a criminal offence.
The reported threats and destruction of property have also raised concerns about the safety of individuals facing hostility and violence within their own communities.
Community Outrage and Demands for Police Action
One resident, who requested anonymity, expressed frustration over what they described as police leniency towards individuals accused of engaging in same-sex relationships.
The resident argued that stronger action was necessary to safeguard the community’s moral values and prevent what they perceived as harmful influences on younger generations.
The resident further claimed that some community members favoured extreme measures, including killing those they believed were involved in homosexual acts. However, the resident also called on police to locate the two men and ensure that any allegations were addressed through the legal system.
Police Response Amid Community Tensions
In an account attributed to ASP Ainebyona of Kasangati Police, the officer reportedly indicated that police were seeking to establish the whereabouts of Joseph Nyanzi and his unidentified male companion following the alleged mob attack in Kyankima, Gayaza.
According to the attributed remarks, the purpose was to ensure the men’s safety while investigations continued into the circumstances surrounding the incident and allegations of a same-sex relationship.
The officer was also described as condemning mob justice, maintaining that members of the public had no authority to take the law into their own hands, regardless of the accusations against the two individuals.
ASP Ainebyona reportedly declined to discuss the matter further, citing ongoing investigations.
Uganda’s Legal and Social Environment
Uganda maintains strict laws against homosexuality, with Section 145 of the Penal Code criminalising certain same-sex sexual acts and providing for penalties of up to life imprisonment.
Homosexuality remains a highly sensitive issue in many Ugandan communities, where strong cultural, religious and social opposition continues to expose individuals suspected of engaging in same-sex relationships to discrimination, harassment and threats of violence.
Human rights organisations continue to raise concerns about the treatment of sexual minorities in Uganda, particularly incidents involving intimidation, arbitrary arrests and attacks against individuals accused of homosexuality.
However, the country’s legal restrictions do not give members of the public the authority to threaten, assault or punish suspected individuals outside the law.
The reported confrontation in Gayaza highlights the growing concerns surrounding mob violence, community hostility and the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to protect individuals from unlawful attacks.
Whereabouts Remain a Central Question
The whereabouts of Joseph Nyanzi and his unidentified male companion remain unclear following the alleged mob attack at his residence.
The two men reportedly escaped by climbing over the property’s perimeter wall as an angry crowd gathered outside, threatening to attack them over suspicions of a same-sex relationship.
The incident raises serious concerns about their safety, particularly in light of the alleged threats made against them.
Questions also remain over the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, the reported destruction of property and whether those responsible for the alleged violence have been identified.
The case highlights the dangers of mob justice and the need for authorities to ensure that allegations are investigated through lawful procedures while protecting individuals from threats and violence.
