February 13, 2026

Maj Gen Francis Takirwa now rests at his ancestral home in Kashari Sayuni, Mbarara district. On Thursday, the nation gathered to honour him after he passed away on February 7, 2026, at age 60. Consequently, family, fellow soldiers, and leaders came together to celebrate a life defined by duty and integrity.

Colleagues remember Francis Takirwa as courageous, disciplined, and deeply committed. In recognition of his rank and four decades of service, the UPDF gave him a 13-gun salute. Moreover, the burial drew senior officers, junior ranks, politicians, and citizens from across Uganda.

Lt Gen Joseph Musanyufu represented the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He emphasized that “loss is measured by life’s worth and by impact.” Furthermore, he noted that Francis Takirwa lived with purpose and left a lasting legacy. Indeed, what matters most is what one leaves behind—and Francis Takirwa built a legacy of selfless service.

Lt Gen Sam Okiding delivered a message from General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. According to the message, Francis Takirwa was a natural leader. Throughout his career, he demonstrated resilience, professionalism, and consistent excellence. As a result, he earned respect from superiors, peers, and subordinates alike. Additionally, he balanced military discipline with genuine compassion.

His sister, Florence Sanyu, spoke on behalf of the family. She explained that he rose through merit alone. “He was not handpicked,” she said. “He earned every promotion through effort, energy, and commitment.” She also thanked President Museveni and UPDF leadership for their steadfast support during his illness and long career.

Born on November 7, 1965, Francis Takirwa joined the UPDF in 1989. From the outset, he proved himself reliable and professional. Over time, he pursued continuous military education. For example, in 1994, he completed the Junior Command and Staff Course in Jinja. Four years later, he finished the Company Commanders Course in Tanzania.

Later, he deepened his strategic knowledge abroad. In 2006, he studied at China’s Nanjing Army Command College. Subsequently, he earned a diploma in African Strategic Studies from Egypt’s Nasser Higher Military Academy. He also completed South Africa’s Executive National Security Programme.

On the operational front, Francis Takirwa served with AMISOM in Somalia from 2011 to 2012. There, he contributed to regional peace and stability. At home, he held key roles including Chief of Education, Sports, and Culture. He also commanded the 2nd UPDF Division with distinction.

The UPDF promoted him to Colonel in 2014. Afterward, he became Brigadier General and then Major General in 2021. In 2022, he assumed the role of Deputy Commander of the UPDF Land Forces. He held this position until his passing.

Col Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, confirmed the details of his death. Specifically, Maj Gen Takirwa died at 6:00 a.m. at the UPDF National Referral Hospital in Mbuya. Ultimately, complications from a stroke led to his death.

Although his passing came suddenly, his influence endures. In fact, he showed that true leadership lies in consistency, humility, and service. Today, Uganda honours Francis Takirwa not just as a soldier—but as a model of integrity. Undoubtedly, his example will inspire generations to come.
