Oscar Pistorius, the South African Paralympic champion who shot and killed his girlfriend in 2013, has been denied parole after seeking early release from prison.
According to the victim’s family lawyer, Tania Koen, the request has been denied, and it will be considered again in one year. The Department of Correctional Services stated that Pistorius had not completed the minimum detention period required for parole.
Pistorius, also known as “Blade Runner” for his carbon-fiber prosthetics, was initially jailed for a six-year term in 2016. He was later sentenced to 13 years after prosecutors appealed, arguing that the initial sentence was too lenient. Pistorius claimed that he mistook his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, for a burglar and denied killing her in a rage.
The parole hearing took place at a correctional facility where Pistorius is being held.
In South Africa, prisoners are eligible for parole consideration after serving half of their sentence, and Pistorius has served more than half since starting his term in 2014.
