In the wake of recent international terror alerts issued against Uganda, the government has pointed fingers at the opposition, particularly the leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP), for allegedly tarnishing the country’s image. The blame comes as the United Kingdom issued a travel advisory warning its citizens about the safety situation in Uganda following a brutal attack on Mpondwe Lhubirira secondary school by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels, resulting in the loss of numerous lives, including students. Prior to the ADF attack, the US Embassy had also issued a security threat.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Henry Okello Oryem, expressed in a press briefing today that the government believes the opposition politicians, especially those from NUP, frequently attend international conferences where they propagate fear and project an image of Uganda being under attack. Minister Oryem further stated, “These NUP people and their supporters in the diaspora paint a bad image about the country. But we are equally not seated as government. We will come up with means to counteract this propaganda being peddled by these unpatriotic NUP people.”
Undeterred by the UK’s travel advisory, Minister Oryem emphasized that the government will seek alternative trade partners and tourists from the Eastern Bloc, intending to engage with countries such as France, Spain, Portugal, and China. He affirmed his plans to visit China to address potential investors and tourists in the coming days.
Echoing the sentiment, Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, the spokesperson for the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), alleged that the West often issues terror threats against countries that oppose the LGBTQ agenda. He claimed that the label of terrorism is often used when a country rejects the LGBTQ agenda. Brig. Gen. Kulayigye assured the public that the UPDF is implementing measures to safeguard the lives and property of Ugandans, urging everyone to remain vigilant.
While the government blames the opposition for tainting Uganda’s international image, concerns remain about the security situation in the country. The recent ADF attack on a secondary school has raised serious questions about the ability to ensure the safety of citizens and visitors alike. It is crucial for the government and opposition to engage in a constructive dialogue to address these concerns and work towards a safer and more prosperous Uganda.
