Absa Bank Uganda and the Kampala Hash House Harriers (KHHH) have revealed the official route map for the upcoming Absa KH3 – 7 Hills Run, scheduled to take place this Sunday, May 28, 2023.
The 21km race will commence at Kingdom Kampala in Nakasero and follow a route that includes Nile Avenue, Kyadondo Road, Nakasero Hill Road, Kyaggwe Road, Namirembe Road, Albert Cook Road, and Rubaga Road.
This event marks the beginning of a three-year partnership between Absa Bank Uganda and KHHH, aimed at promoting physical wellness. Proceeds from the run will support initiatives focused on girl-child education, a key component of Absa’s commitment to being an active force for good in the community.
The announced route will start from Rubaga Road and take runners through Lubiri Ring Road, Mengo Hill Road, Nsambya Road, Gaba Road, Kibuli Road, 8th Street Industrial Area, Access Road, Mukwano Road, Yusuf Lule Road, and conclude at Kingdom Kampala on Nile Avenue. For those interested in a shorter route, there is an optional 6km route that covers one hill.
Helen Nangonzi, Marketing and Customer Experience Director at Absa Bank Uganda, explained that runners will receive ribbons upon completing each of Kampala’s seven iconic hills, with ribbon points established at Nakasero, Old Kampala, Namirembe, Rubaga, Mengo, Nsambya, and Kibuli hills. Water points will be available at these stations to support the runners. Nangonzi expressed gratitude to all the partners who have joined in supporting this worthy cause.
Registration for the run is still open, with individuals and organizations encouraged to participate for a nominal fee. Registration can be completed physically or digitally, and payments can be made at any convenient Absa branch or by dialing 2335#.
The event will kick off at 6:00 AM with a warm-up session and official flagging off. Participants have the option to register as individuals or organizations, with staff teams able to participate in various categories starting with 10 runners at UGX 1 million.
All funds raised from this collaborative event with the Kampala Hash House Harriers will contribute to important initiatives aimed at keeping girls in school. These initiatives include providing skills training to teenage mothers to help them attain sustainable livelihoods and improving menstrual hygiene management to reduce school absenteeism and dropout rates among girls.
Despite relatively high enrollment rates, recent data indicates that only 53% of Ugandan girls aged 6-12 complete the required seven years of primary education, while a mere 22.5% of the female population in Uganda enrolls in secondary education. These low numbers can be attributed to various obstacles faced by girls in the community, such as poverty, cultural barriers, early marriages, unwanted pregnancies, and challenges related to managing menstrual hygiene.
Over 2,000 participants are expected to take part in this weekend’s run, contributing to a cause that will make a significant social impact in supporting girls’ education in Uganda.
