The Deputy Speaker of the House, Thomas Tayebwa, expressed concern about the alleged starvation of young people in remand homes in Northern Uganda during his communication to the House on Thursday, April 6th, 2023.
He referred to disturbing images of young people from Karamoja who had been starved within remand homes and urged that those responsible for their plight should be held accountable.
Hon. Faith Nakut, the Napak District Woman MP, further stated that 21 young boys who were released from Gulu Remand Home were seen to have been starved, with one boy having died and been buried recently while the rest are being rehabilitated at a health center in Kotido District.
She also highlighted the limited resources of many remand homes in Uganda to cater to the juveniles under their custody.
In response, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has pledged to conduct investigations into the alleged starvation of youths in remand homes in Northern Uganda.
She stated that she will instruct the Ministry of Health to upgrade the health centers that are rehabilitating the affected youths and others to Health Centre IIIs.
Hon. Faith Nakut asked what the Prime Minister plans to do to assist the health center in taking care of the affected boys and whether she will do something to comfort the family that lost their son.
The Deputy Speaker has requested the Prime Minister to present a comprehensive report on the matter to the House on Thursday, April 13th, 2023.
