Gulu city earmarks Ugx 50m to establish an engineering laboratory

GULU, UGANDA: Gulu City Council has earmarked Shillings 50 million for establishing an engineering laboratory for testing construction materials. This is to ensure that all roads and buildings are constructed with materials that have been tested and approved.

Christopher Balmoi Omara, the Gulu City Engineer, told reporters in an interview that most public and private infrastructures in Gulu City, as well as other parts of the country, do not last long due to the lack of quality designs, poor construction materials, and insufficient supervision.

He says that as one of the ways of ensuring the quality of infrastructure in Gulu City, they have decided to construct a laboratory worth Sh 50 million to test all construction materials.

Balmoi revealed that the laboratory will have numerous pieces of equipment to test soil samples as well as the quality of other products used for construction.

Sam Ocula, an engineer in Gulu City, hailed the city authorities for the move but appealed to them to ensure that all the building plans used in the city are approved since there are many buildings without approved plans.

In an interview, Gulu City Mayor Alfred Okwonga told reporters in an interview that his office held a meeting with all engineers, surveyors, and contractors in Gulu City and discussed issues of quality service delivery where they cautioned them against unprofessionalism and doing shoddy work.

Okwonga also added that there are a number of unregistered engineers operating in the city, something he said should be dealt with accordingly.
