The Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Mary Goretti Kimono Kitutu, along with her brother Micheal Naboya Kitutu, will be spending the Easter weekend in Luzira prison.
This comes after they failed to obtain bail from the Anti-Corruption Court, where they were remanded on allegations of diverting iron sheets intended for the Karamoja Community Empowerment Programme.
The presiding Chief Magistrate, Joan Aciro, declined to grant bail, stating that she needed ample time to review their bail application. The defence lawyers, led by Micheal Wamasebu, made a last-minute plea for interim bail, which was not successful.
The accused will appear in court again on April 12, when the magistrate is expected to rule on their bail application.
While in court, the minister refuted the charges of causing loss of public property and conspiracy to defraud. She responded, “I have heard and understood the charge; it is not true, and I am not guilty.”
