Police officers warned against meddling in partisan politics

Police officers deployed to guard politicians should not actively get involved in partisan politics, the deputy police spokesperson, Polly Namaye, warned yesterday.

While addressing the media in Kampala, Namaye said officers deployed to guard politicians should stick to providing security to individuals and keep out of the electioneering.

The remarks come shortly before the NRM conducts its primaries, a process that has witnessed the active involvement of some security officers attached to certain politicians.

Namaye said that the force shall not hesitate to take action against officers who seek to influence the political process.

“Police officers are not supposed to be carrying bags for politicians. You are not supposed to be carrying money for the politicians. You are not supposed to be involved in the campaigns for the politicians. Your work is to secure those different VIPs as per the request,”said Namaye.

Namaye also said that the force has deployed cops across the country to ensure the NRM primaries are conducted in a peaceful and civilised manner.

According to Namaye, all forms of violence will be countered.

“We call upon all candidates, their campaign agents and supporters to refrain from all forms of violence and proactive behaviour during the party primaries,” she said.

“We want to assure the [NRM] that we have adequately deployed to counter all forms of electoral violence during the primaries and further thank them for their strong commitment to working with us.”
