Speaker Among Urges Strengthening Traffic Regulations in Kampala

During a recent parliamentary session, Speaker Anita Among emphasized the critical need for the Minister of Internal Affairs, Kahinda Otafiire, to bolster the enforcement of traffic regulations, aiming to instill order and discipline on the roads, thus curbing the escalating rates of road accidents.

Expressing concern over the surge in indiscipline among road users, particularly reckless drivers of government vehicles and flagrant disregard for traffic rules by cyclists, Speaker Among highlighted the profound impact of this misconduct on the soaring rates of road accidents and the consequent economic costs.

Amid ongoing roadworks in various parts of Kampala, attributed primarily to the impending international conferences and meetings, Among acknowledged the commendable efforts of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in enhancing the city’s physical infrastructure. However, she urged KCCA to expand the scope of these road improvements beyond the immediate conference-related areas to contribute to the overarching goal of a more aesthetically pleasing Kampala.

Recognizing the inconveniences that road construction often brings to commuters, the Speaker called upon KCCA to expedite these projects, ensuring adherence to agreed-upon specifications and budgets.

Furthermore, Among reiterated Parliament’s unwavering commitment to supporting KCCA’s initiatives aimed at transforming Kampala into a more attractive and functional city. She urged both the Executive and Local Authorities to prioritize robust physical planning, stressing its pivotal role in sustainable infrastructure development across cities and municipalities.

Highlighting the direct correlation between efficient transport infrastructure and economic productivity, Speaker Among emphasized the imperative of enhancing the functionality and efficiency of available infrastructure for the betterment of production processes and overall productivity.
