Stolen Vehicle Mars Burial Ceremony of Prominent Ugandan Businessman Aponye

The Diocese of Kigezi faces a troubling situation as they struggle to locate a motor vehicle that was stolen during the burial service of Apollo Nyegamehe, also known as Aponye, a prominent businessman and the incumbent district National Resistance Movement (NRM) party chairman in Uganda. The burial took place in Kitaburaza village, Muhanga town council, Rukiga district, with the incident casting a shadow over the solemn occasion.

According to Rev. Canon Milton Nkurunungi, the Diocesan Secretary, the stolen vehicle has the registration number UAT 478N. The theft occurred during the burial service held at Aponye’s residence, which was attended by a multitude of mourners. The vehicle was affiliated with the Kikungiri Archdeaconry in the southern division of Kabale municipality, under the supervision of the Diocese of Kigezi in Muhanga town council.

Despite their efforts, the diocese has been unable to locate the stolen vehicle, prompting them to seek assistance from security authorities across western Uganda. Rev. Canon Nkurunungi expressed deep concern and condemned the heartless act, questioning how someone could take advantage of a grieving community during a burial ceremony.

The burial of Aponye attracted a significant gathering, including business operators, political leaders, clergy, and government officials, all paying their respects to the late businessman and NRM chairman.

Tragically, Aponye lost his life in a car crash on July 6 in Itojo, Ntungamo. The police have since detained his driver, Mr. Moses Buyinza, on suspicion of reckless driving that may have caused the fatal accident.

The search for the stolen vehicle continues as the Diocese of Kigezi, local authorities, and security agencies collaborate to recover the stolen property. The incident has left the community and mourners dismayed, as the act of theft during a time of mourning and remembrance has marred the burial proceedings.

Efforts are underway to ensure that the stolen vehicle is traced and returned to its rightful owners, as the Diocese of Kigezi remains committed to resolving the matter and bringing the culprits to justice. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for heightened security measures during significant events to safeguard against such unfortunate incidents.
