The prestigious Makerere University 76th Graduation ceremony officially commences this week at the main campus in Kampala. Starting on February 24, the university expects to confer degrees upon a total of 9,295 students across various academic disciplines. In addition, the four-day event marks a significant milestone for the ivory tower as it celebrates the achievements of its latest cohort. According to the official statement released on February 23, male students outnumber their female counterparts this year. Specifically, the statistics show 5,033 males and 4,262 females currently awaiting their graduation. Consequently, the campus is buzzing with excitement as families gather to witness this momentous occasion.
To begin with, the academic breakdown reveals a high level of achievement among the graduates. For instance, 213 students will receive Doctorates, which includes 87 females and 126 males. Furthermore, the master’s degree category remains strong with 1,087 females and 1,416 males set to graduate. Meanwhile, undergraduate students form the largest group, with 2,999 females and 3,344 males receiving bachelor’s degrees. In total, the university will also award diplomas and postgraduate diplomas to several hundred more students. Therefore, the diversity of qualifications highlights the university’s continued role as a leading center for research and learning in Africa.
Regarding the schedule, the institution has organized the ceremony by colleges to manage the large crowds. On the first day, students from the Colleges of Agriculture, Computing, and Education join the School of Law to receive their honors. Subsequently, the College of Health Sciences and the School of Public Health will take center stage on February 25. By doing so, the university ensures each department receives proper recognition. Following this, the College of Business and Management Sciences, along with MUBS, graduates on February 26. Finally, the Makerere University 76th Graduation concludes on February 27 with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Engineering.
However, the total number of graduates this year is lower than the previous year’s count of 13,658. As a result, Academic Registrar Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi clarified that the lower numbers stem from the 2022 admissions cycle. During that time, the university admitted only 5,000 students due to the global impact of COVID-19. Normally, the institution admits roughly 14,000 students annually. Nevertheless, the quality of graduates remains high. The university prioritized diploma holders and mature age entrants during that restrictive period. Thus, this graduation represents a resilient group of students who navigated unique academic challenges.
In conclusion, the ceremony will host several high-profile dignitaries to honor the students. Notably, the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Ms. Janet Kataha Museveni, plans to grace the occasion. Additionally, University Chancellor Dr. Crispus Kiyonga will preside over the proceedings. In short, the Makerere University 76th Graduation serves as a testament to the endurance of higher education in Uganda. Moving forward, these graduates will enter the workforce ready to contribute to national development. Ultimately, the entire university community celebrates this week as a triumph of academic excellence and perseverance.
