In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a 19-year-old man has been apprehended by the police in Kapchorwa District, Eastern Uganda, on allegations of sodomizing a two-year-old boy. The suspect, a resident of London Bridge, Kawowo Ward in Kapchorwa Central Division, is now facing charges of aggravated defilement.
According to Sipi Regional Police spokesperson ASP Fredmark Chesang, the horrifying incident unfolded when the mother of the victim left her child at home to tend to her garden. Seizing this opportunity, the suspect allegedly committed the heinous act while the child’s mother was absent. Distressingly, it was only upon her return that she noticed her son’s discomfort, prompting her to rush him to the hospital for examination. The medical assessment confirmed the allegations of sodomy.
ASP Chesang expressed gratitude for the community’s cooperation in bringing the alleged perpetrator to justice. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and continue their unwavering support in exposing criminals and safeguarding their neighborhoods.
The incident sheds light on the broader issue of child sexual abuse in Uganda. The Police Annual Crime report released earlier this year revealed alarming statistics, with a total of 12,780 victims of defilement recorded in 2022, predominantly affecting females. However, it also indicated a slight decrease in reported cases of aggravated defilement from 2021 to 2022, signifying some progress in addressing this grave concern.
Child protection remains a paramount priority, necessitating concerted efforts from all segments of society. The need for increased awareness, comprehensive education, and robust law enforcement measures cannot be overstated.
