Uganda, in collaboration with neighboring countries Kenya and Tanzania, has officially launched a joint bid to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in 2027. The announcement was made by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, alongside the First Lady Mama Janet Kataha Museveni and the Minister of Education and Sports, during a ceremony held at State House, Entebbe.
Expressing his enthusiasm for hosting AFCON 2027, President Museveni emphasized the importance of sports as a means of empowerment for the youth. While acknowledging the positive transformation of sports from mere entertainment to a viable career path, he cautioned against solely focusing on sports and neglecting other income-generating activities.
Accompanied by Deputy Speaker Hon Thomas Tayebwa, FUFA President Eng Moses Magogo, and State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, President Museveni highlighted the potential benefits of hosting such a prestigious tournament. These include automatic participation in the tournament, a boost to the hotel and food industry, and the opportunity to showcase the beauty and hospitality of East Africa.
The joint bid to host AFCON 2027 marks a significant milestone for Uganda and its East African neighbors, as it would be the first time the tournament is held on East African soil. The bid aims to attract attention to the region’s growing sporting infrastructure, enthusiasm for football, and potential for hosting major international events.
As Uganda sets its sights on hosting AFCON 2027, the country remains committed to nurturing the talent and potential of its youth. The government recognizes that sports can be a powerful tool for personal and national development, but also emphasizes the importance of a diversified approach that encompasses various income-generating activities.
If successful, hosting AFCON 2027 will not only bring prestige and excitement to Uganda but also provide economic opportunities and leave a lasting legacy for the country and the entire East African region.
