Uganda’s Nakivubo Stadium Receives High Praise from CAF Inspectors in AFCON 2027 Bid

In a major boost to Uganda’s bid to co-host the AFCON 2027 tournament, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) inspectors were thoroughly impressed by the magnificent Nakivubo Stadium, constructed by tycoon Hamis Kiggundu, popularly known as Ham. The stadium, valued at billions, garnered high accolades from the CAF officials for meeting the stringent standards required to host prestigious football events like AFCON.

Uganda is competing to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania. In preparation for the crucial CAF inspection, the President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), Eng. Moses Magogo, meticulously selected venues to showcase during the evaluation.

Among the venues chosen for inspection were Mulago Hospital, Sheraton Hotel, and Kampala Serena Hotel, earmarked for accommodating players and officials. The training grounds, including Kampala International School Uganda (KISU), Muteesa II Stadium Wankuluku, and St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende, were also included in the list. The stadiums shortlisted for AFCON matches were Mandela National Stadium Namboole, Denver in Garuga, and Hamis Kiggundu’s Nakivubo Stadium.

The CAF inspection team, during their visit to Nakivubo Stadium, meticulously examined various critical criteria essential for hosting top-tier football competitions. Notably, they paid keen attention to the quality of the playing surface, which Ham ensured met international standards by importing high-grade grass carpets used in top-tier stadiums worldwide. Professional engineers from Europe were involved in the installation, ensuring compliance with the game’s laws.

In addition to the playing surface, the CAF inspectors scrutinized modern floodlights, a standby generator, well-equipped dressing rooms to cater to a minimum of four teams, first aid and treatment facilities, comfortable seating for spectators, and media facilities.

The inspection extended to the provision of necessary amenities such as television sets, refrigerators stocked with non-alcoholic drinks, sealed mineral water bottles, and waste-paper bins for bottles.

The comprehensive inspection tour continued as the CAF officials evaluated Nakivubo Stadium’s inner and outer perimeters, the mixed zone area, parking facilities, washrooms, restaurants, outlets, and access roads. Ham’s impressive construction of channels around the stadium ensured smooth water flow during rainy periods.

Uganda’s bid for AFCON 2027 received a significant boost as the CAF inspectors expressed their utmost satisfaction with the standard of Nakivubo Stadium, acknowledging its potential to host CAF A type competitions. This positive appraisal stands as a testament to the country’s readiness to co-host the prestigious football tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

With the CAF inspection now concluded, Uganda anxiously awaits the decision on the AFCON 2027 co-hosting rights, hopeful that the exceptional facilities and presentation of Nakivubo Stadium have significantly strengthened their bid. The successful joint East African bid would be a historic milestone, firmly establishing Uganda as an eminent destination for hosting international football events.
