President Museveni Urges Peaceful resolution of Unjust Wars at Russian-African Summit

President Museveni delivered a compelling message during the recently concluded Russian-African summit, urging countries, organizations, and people worldwide to reject the culture of promoting unjustified wars, terrorism, and criminality on the African continent and beyond.

At the first session of the second Russia-Africa summit in Saint Petersburg, President Museveni highlighted the futility of engaging in wars driven by ideological issues. He emphasized that such conflicts are wasteful and unproductive, as history has proven that unjustifiable wars ultimately lead to failure. In contrast, Museveni cited examples of just wars, like anti-colonial struggles, which resulted in humanity’s triumph against all odds.

Advocating for peaceful solutions to global issues, the Ugandan President encouraged dialogue as the preferred means of resolving disagreements and societal challenges. He stressed the need for nations to explore dialogue rather than resorting to violence as the primary solution.

President Museveni also expressed concern over forces within Africa and foreign actors that undermine democratically elected governments in the region. He singled out the recent incident in Niger as a shameful act in the modern era, condemning such actions that destabilize legitimate governance.

The call to reject “unjust wars” comes amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine in Europe. The war, which escalated in February 2022 with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has resulted in extensive casualties, displacements, and infrastructure damage.

The conflict, part of the Russo-Ukrainian War that began in 2014 with Russia’s annexation of Crimea and support to separatist movements in Ukraine’s Donbas region, continues to draw international attention.

President Museveni’s message at the Russian-African summit serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions to conflicts. It also highlights the need for global cooperation and dialogue to foster peace, stability, and progress in Africa and the world at large.
