68 Pupils, School Staffs Hospitalised Over Suspected Poisoning

Information obtained by URN shows that the problem started around Thursday evening shortly after the pupils had just completed their supper. The School Deputy Head teacher, Wilberforce Taika says all pupils, a teacher and school cook who ate the food development stomach ache and were hospitalised.

Over 60 Pupils and two staff members at Kagumu Primary School in Kagumu Sub County in Kibuku district have been hospitalised because of suspected poisoning. 

The victims were rushed to Kibuku health center in critical condition on Thursday evening after eating suspected poisoned food. 

Information obtained by URN shows that the problem started around Thursday evening shortly after the pupils had just completed their supper. 

The School Deputy Head teacher, Wilberforce Taika says the pupils, a teacher and school cook who ate the food developed stomach ache and were hospitalised. 

He suspects that the food could have been laced with poison because of the poor relationship with some community members.

The school guard, David Pado, says pupils started complaining of stomach ache as they were preparing for evening preps. 

Pado says that he had also asked the pupils to get some food they told him that it had a smell of soap, which prompted him not to eat it. 

He also says that he has severally asked management to fence the school for easy control in vain.

  Parents fault management for failing to provide security to their children. 

They say that the school administration assured them of security before they allowed their children to sleep at school. 

They however, say nothing has been done since the boarding section started last year.

    Brenda Talima, the Kagumu Willage Women Council Chairperso, says some parents had rejected the idea of the boarding section but the school management told them it was a government policy for P7 candidates to sleep at school.

Charles Kadiama Busolo, the Kibuku District LC V Chairperson, says police is investigating the matter to ascertain the cause of the problem.

He said they are aware of the boarding section at the school, saying they asked schools to put in place the necessary infrastructure.

Dr. Rashid Simuya, the Kibuku Health Center IV in charge told Uganda Radio Network health workers managed to stabilise the students. 

He said except four pupils, who were whisked away by their parents and the school cook, the rest are pending discharge.   

Simuya said that plenary findings have ruled out biological infections in the food, adding that they have over the food samples to police for investigations.

    Stephen Twinomugisha, the Kibuku District Police Commander, says investigations are ongoing, adding that they have forwarded the food samples to the Government Analytical Laboratories for further investigations.   

“We suspect that the person who did that was an outsider because even the person who was involved in the cooking is also a victim but most important is that all the victims have normalized,” he said in a phone interview.
