The US has confirmed a lethal strike in Syria, targeting Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, an al-Qaeda affiliate leader with direct ties to an ISIS gunman responsible for the deaths of three Americans in December 2025. This operation marks a significant escalation in the US’s ongoing efforts to retaliate against ISIS and its affiliates in the region.

Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM), released a statement on X following the strike, emphasizing that the death of al-Jasim underscores the US’s commitment to holding accountable those responsible for attacks on American personnel. The strike is part of a broader campaign, “Operation Hawkeye Strike,” which has resulted in more than 100 targeted hits on ISIS infrastructure and weapons sites across Syria.

Al-Jasim, described by CENTCOM as an experienced terrorist leader, was directly connected to the ISIS gunman who carried out the attack on December 13, 2025, in Palmyra, Syria. The attack killed two US service members and a civilian interpreter, sparking a wave of retaliatory strikes against ISIS positions in Syria. Despite these efforts, ISIS has not claimed responsibility for the attack, although reports have suggested that the gunman may have been part of Syria’s Internal Security Service.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth voiced the country’s unyielding resolve in the aftermath of the attack, writing on X, “We will never forget, and never relent,” as American troops continue to maintain a strong presence in the region. Hundreds of US forces remain deployed in Syria as part of the long-standing mission to combat ISIS and its affiliates.

The Syrian government has distanced itself from the attacker, with its Ministry of Interior Affairs claiming that the individual was not affiliated with the state’s fledgling government, which has been increasingly supported by the US in recent months. This statement highlights the complex political situation in Syria, where various factions continue to vie for power amid ongoing conflict.

The US military’s focused retaliation, through precision strikes, reflects its strategy of targeting key operatives within terrorist networks while working to stabilize the region. These efforts are part of a larger global counterterrorism mission, aiming to disrupt terrorist networks and ensure the safety of American personnel abroad.

The death of al-Jasim, while marking a victory in the fight against terrorism, is a reminder of the continuing challenges faced by US forces in the region, as they navigate complex alliances and maintain pressure on groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda.
